The Healthy You program focuses on making lifestyle changes to help you reach and maintain a healthier body weight and shape. You will learn how nutrition, physical activity, self-esteem, your behaviours, and the environment affect your body size through intuitive eating.

The aim of this program is to build your knowledge and skills, increase your confidence and help you make achievable goals for change.The hope is that you will be empowered to make permanent lifestyle changes through goal setting, while having the support of your facilitators and other group members to share strategies to overcome potential barriers.

This is a 12 week program with sessions that cover a variety of topics. We recognize this is a significant time commitment, but feel it is worth the investment in your health. Each week you will gain new knowledge (or a refresher) of relevant topics to your health, learn a skill and build confidence by applying it to your lifestyle.

Walk a Block, Hear a Talk

In addition to the  Healthy You program, you will have the opportunity to take part in “Walk a Block, Hear a Talk” led by a Registered Dietitian (RD) and Registered Nurse (RN). We know that knowledge is only one part of the puzzle when taking an active approach to changing your health. It is good to build your knowledge in class but practicing the skills and applying strategies are essential to maintaining changes in your behaviour for the long term. The RD will provide ongoing support for topics and challenges that have been identified in regards to eating well; this will be tailored to the groups’ needs. The RN will provide support and education on safe physical activity, as well as conduct testing at the beginning and end of the walking program (see below) to assess physical changes/benefits of the program.

 What am I expected to do?

 

  • Speak to your physician to be cleared for physical activity
  • Complete a weekly checklist to ensure you are safe to engage in physical activity (e.g. Are you having chest pain? When was the last time you have eaten? Etc.)
  • We encourage each participant to track their mood and energy levels before and after each walking group
  • You may also opt to complete pre- and post-testing that will assess your endurance (1 kilometer walk), balance, strength (sit-to-stand) and blood pressure
